April is here. My month. And baby… this one feels different. April 17, I turn 54. Fifty-four years of life, growth, lessons, wins, and stepping into every version of myself that I once prayed for. And if there’s one thing I know for sure at this stage in my life, it’s this: You have to celebrate yourself while you’re here. Not later. Not when everything is perfect. Not when life slows down.
February is not just another month on the calendar. It’s Black History Month, and baby, it’s a whole celebration of brilliance, resilience, culture, and legacy.
Life is not always about Insta-pretty moments. Sometimes it throws you a plot twist that steals sleep and little pieces of joy. But you can still win every single time- if you decide to rise back up. And this year, that’s exactly what I did.
There is a heaviness in the air this year. Elders, parents, caregivers… they are all trying to stretch a little bit of something into enough. But even in the face of all this, we still hold a power- yes, the power- the ability to care loud, to show up-with a hot meal, a warm hello, or simply a moment of real, undistracted attention. Because when someone feels remembered, that’s when hope starts to rise again- and right now, that means more than ever.
We were eating, celebrating culture, singing our hearts out to Whitney, playing Black trivia, and swapping stories between bites of oxtail and sips of cocktails. I found deeper conversations wrapped in spice, history served with hot sauce, and connection with strangers who somehow started to feel like we’d known each other for years.
This month I sat down with the incredible Dr. Kushagra Verma, one of LA’s top orthopedic spinal surgeons, and let me tell you-he spilled the tea on all things spine health. From back pain myths to surgical truths to what recovery really looks like, this episode is packed with gems.
You can take a nap. You can take a break. But you can’t give those things to someone else — no matter how much you love them. And that’s why while going 24/7, choosing ‘Rest’ is a radical act of self-love. So go ahead- unplug for a minute. Because this month, we are leaning all the way in.
So many of us are walking around with invisible weight strapped to our backs. Anxiety that doesn’t clock out. Grief that sneaks in during quiet moments. Burnout that coffee just can’t fix. And yet… we smile. We show up. We hold it together.
